Northern Territory Climate Change Response: Towards 2050

Limiting climate change requires substantial and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions which, together with adaptation, can limit climate change risks. Government, industry and the community will need to adapt and respond to the changing circumstances collectively.

The Northern Territory Government has committed to taking action on climate change to maximise the economic, social and environmental wellbeing of Territorians.

The Northern Territory Government’s Climate Change Response: Towards 2050 PDF (1.6 MB) provides a policy framework that will enable the Northern Territory to strategically manage climate change risk and opportunities. It is a whole of government response and partnership with all Territorians. Everyone has a role to play.

The response identifies 4 key objectives to inform future actions and guide development of mitigation and adaptation strategies:

  1. achieve net zero emissions
  2. build a resilient Territory
  3. unlock opportunities from a low carbon future
  4. inform and involve all Territorians.

Outcomes of consultation to develop the NT climate change response

The Northern Territory Government released the draft ‘Northern Territory Climate Change Response: Towards 2050’ (the draft response) in late 2019. The draft response built on a previous climate change discussion paper and outlined the Northern Territory Government's approach to addressing climate risk and harnessing the potential opportunities associated with the transition to a low-carbon economy.
